In a recent advisory, Apple cautioned iPhone users against the common practice of placing wet devices in a bag of rice for drying, suggesting that it may cause additional damage. The support document from Apple emphasizes that small particles of rice could potentially harm the iPhone during the drying process. Instead, the company recommends a safer approach for drying wet iPhones.
Users are instructed to gently tap the device against their hand, with the connector facing down, to remove excess water. Subsequently, the iPhone should be placed in a dry area with adequate airflow for around 30 minutes before attempting to charge it.
Apple notes that complete drying may take up to 24 hours, during which users may see a liquid detection alert. While charging a wet iPhone is generally discouraged, Apple provides an emergency override option if necessary.
The company also issues a warning against using foreign objects, such as hair dryers or compressed air, for liquid removal, as well as advises against inserting items like cotton swabs or paper towels into the connector.
Apple’s guidance is part of efforts to address potential damage caused by traditional drying methods and offers a more effective approach for users dealing with wet iPhones.
