Pune: A 25-year-old woman preparing for banking exams has been arrested by Pune city police for allegedly drugging her former roommate with sedative-laced cold coffee and stealing gold jewellery worth ₹5.46 lakh.

The accused, Aishwarya Sanjay Garad, a resident of Ambegaon Pathar, was taken into custody on April 3 after a complaint was filed at the Bharati Vidyapeeth police station by a 31-year-old housewife residing in a housing society on Sinhagad College Road, Ambegaon Budruk. The complainant’s husband works as an IT engineer.

According to the FIR, Garad had previously lived with the complainant as a roommate. On March 6, she visited the complainant’s house and offered her cold coffee. After consuming the beverage, the woman lost consciousness and found Garad gone when she regained awareness hours later.

A similar incident occurred on March 26, when Garad once again visited with cold coffee. The housewife felt drowsy after drinking it and later fell ill. She and her husband subsequently consulted a doctor.

It was only on March 30, the day of Gudi Padwa, that the theft came to light. The woman noticed that gold ornaments stored in her cupboard were missing. Upon recalling both incidents of fainting following Garad’s visits, she suspected foul play and contacted Garad. During a phone call, Garad reportedly confessed to stealing the jewellery but refused to return it, prompting the woman to approach the police.

Garad has been booked under sections 305 (theft at a house) and 123 (causing harm using poison, etc.) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

“We have recovered the stolen jewellery from the accused. She was preparing for bank exams. Further investigation is underway,” said Senior Inspector Savalaram Salgaonkar of Bharati Vidyapeeth police station.
