Pune, 9 January: As municipal elections approach, political activity across Bavdhan has begun to intensify, bringing forward a mix of familiar and relatively lesser-known names. Among them is Aarti Karanjawane, who will be contesting the upcoming civic elections from Prabhag 10 (B) as a candidate of the Aam Aadmi Party.

Karanjawane’s entry into the electoral space is being noted locally for its distinctly grassroots origins. Residents and community members familiar with her work describe years of involvement in civic and social issues rather than a sudden political emergence. Her engagement, they say, has largely focused on neighbourhood-level concerns such as sanitation, access to civic amenities, women’s issues, and education.

Unlike the traditional pattern often observed in local politics where women candidates are perceived as representatives for family members or political patrons Karanjawane’s public role has developed independently. Local observers point out that her work has been carried out without prominent political backing, relying instead on direct interaction with residents and follow-ups with civic authorities.

Education has been a recurring theme in her interactions with community groups. Those close to her note that this emphasis stems from personal experience. Her son is an engineer, and her daughter is a medical doctor (MD), recognised by residents as the first woman doctor from the Bavdhan local community. While this achievement is widely mentioned by neighbours, Karanjawane herself is known to reference it primarily in discussions around access to education rather than as a political credential.

With her candidature from Ward 10 (B), Karanjawane is one of the contestant positioning themselves around issue-based civic engagement. As the campaign period progresses, her presence reflects a broader discussion underway in urban wards about representation rooted in sustained local work and everyday civic problem-solving, rather than visibility-driven politics.
