Pune: A fraudulent website impersonating the state-appointed company for High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) has been scamming vehicle owners. Complaints regarding unauthorized deductions from bank accounts have been reported to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and Pune Cyber Police.

Spike in HSRP Registrations Amid Fraud Concerns

As of February 23, over 16,000 vehicles in Pune have been fitted with HSRP, while 24,000 registered owners have scheduled appointments. The online registration count has exceeded 80,000, according to the Pune RTO. With the April 30 deadline for vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, vehicle owners are rushing to complete the process, making them vulnerable to online fraud.

Online Payment Issues Raise Red Flags

  • Vehicle owners attempting online payments for HSRP are encountering multiple fake websites.
  • Despite successful transactions, users are receiving messages stating the payment was not received, prompting them to pay again.
  • No confirmation emails or SMS notifications are being sent, leading to confusion.
  • Some victims have reported higher-than-expected deductions from their bank accounts.

Citizens are advised to use only the government’s official website for HSRP registration, informed RTO.

With 69 authorized centers in Pune for HSRP installation, authorities urge citizens to stay alert and verify website authenticity before making online payments.
