Blast Near Red Fort Kills 8; Delhi, Mumbai And Uttar Pradesh On High Alert
A high-intensity explosion inside a parked car near Lal Qila Metro Station triggers nationwide security escalation
A powerful explosion near Gate No. 1 of Delhi’s Red Fort (Lal Qila) Metro Station on Monday evening left eight people dead and at least 24 others injured, sending shockwaves across the national capital and prompting heightened security in multiple states.
The blast occurred in a parked car in one of the most crowded parts of Old Delhi, close to Chandni Chowk and a key entry point used by thousands of daily commuters and tourists. The impact was so severe that three to four nearby vehicles caught fire, and visuals from the scene showed charred metal, shattered windows, and debris scattered across the road.
The Delhi Fire Department said it received a distress call around 6:55 pm. Seven fire tenders and 15 CAT ambulances were immediately rushed to the spot. Deputy Chief Fire Officer AK Malik confirmed that the fire was brought under control by 7:29 pm. Meanwhile, the injured were taken to Lok Nayak Hospital, where officials later confirmed multiple fatalities.
Investigations are underway, with teams from the Delhi Police Special Cell, the anti-terror squad, forensic units, and security agencies combing the area through the night. The blast site has been completely cordoned off, and traffic movement around Red Fort, Chandni Chowk, and adjoining lanes has been restricted.

National security tightened
Following the explosion, Mumbai was placed on high alert. Security agencies in Maharashtra began strengthening patrols at critical junctions, railway stations, airports, and public landmarks. Senior officials said the alert was precautionary but necessary due to the nature and timing of the Delhi blast.

Uttar Pradesh was also placed on high alert. Orders from Lucknow directed police in all districts to intensify patrolling, enhance checks at crowded locations, and monitor vulnerable points closely. Given the proximity to Delhi and the large influx of daily interstate movement, UP officials have been instructed to keep surveillance tight through the night.
What investigators know so far
While the exact cause of the explosion has not yet been confirmed, the scale of the blast and the nature of the damage have pushed investigators to examine all angles, including the possibility of a deliberate attack. Forensic experts are currently analyzing debris from the car, including metal fragments and traces of accelerants or explosives.
Police officials said initial assessments indicate the blast originated inside the vehicle, but whether it was due to an improvised explosive device, a fuel-related malfunction, or another cause will be known only after forensic reports.
With multiple vehicles catching fire and the blast occurring in a dense pedestrian zone, authorities say the casualty count could have been significantly higher if fire crews had not responded quickly.
The area surrounding the Red Fort—one of Delhi’s busiest tourist zones—is expected to remain under heavy security for the next few days, as central agencies continue their joint investigation.
Officials are expected to release further details once preliminary forensic findings are complete.
