June 5, 2026: A Gurgaon-based doctor has sparked a discussion on wealth, success and financial anxiety after sharing the story of a man who earns Rs 40 lakh annually, owns a BMW and lives comfortably, yet believes he is poor.

Dr Sunny Garg, co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of Everhope Oncology, shared the incident in a recent Instagram video. According to him, the 34-year-old professional admitted that despite his financial success, he frequently felt inadequate and worried about money.

In the video, Garg said the man’s feelings reflect a wider trend among urban professionals, who often find that their expectations rise alongside their income.

Explaining his view, Garg said that while the man belongs to the country’s top income bracket, he compares himself not with the average Indian but with entrepreneurs, startup founders and social media personalities who appear to be more successful. As a result, he said, the man’s perception of his own financial position has changed.

“Statistically, he’s in the top 1% of earners in India. Yet he feels poor because his reference point has shifted,” Garg said in the video.

The doctor described the phenomenon as a form of “modern poverty”, where individuals continue to feel dissatisfied despite achieving financial stability. He said many professionals become trapped in a cycle where their income grows, but their sense of satisfaction does not keep pace.

To illustrate the issue, Garg said he asked the man three questions. According to the doctor, the man said he had never told himself that he was “enough”, was unsure who he was earning money for and could not identify a single activity in his life that was unrelated to work, money or career growth.

Garg concluded that the man’s struggle was not financial hardship but a lack of purpose, contentment and meaningful personal connections.

The video has gained significant attention on social media, with many users saying it resonated with their own experiences of pressure, comparison and the pursuit of success in modern professional life.
