The Bombay High Court has imposed a ₹4 crore penalty on Patanjali Ayurveda, the company founded by yoga guru Baba Ramdev. The fine was levied for violating a court’s interim order that prohibited Patanjali from selling products containing camphor.

Justice R.I. Chagla’s bench at the Bombay High Court noted that Patanjali had deliberately flouted the court’s directives. The bench concluded that there was no doubt about Patanjali’s intention to ignore the court’s orders.

Last year, the High Court had issued an interim order banning the sale of camphor-based products by Patanjali. Following this, Mangalum Organics Limited filed a petition accusing Patanjali of breaching the court’s order. The court has now directed Patanjali to deposit ₹4 crore within two weeks. Earlier this month, the court had also instructed Patanjali to pay ₹50 lakh, bringing the total penalty to ₹4.5 crore.

In August 2023, the Bombay High Court had issued an interim injunction halting the sale and advertising of camphor-based products by Patanjali in response to a petition from Mangalum Organics. Mangalum had accused Patanjali of copyright infringement and subsequently filed a petition claiming that, despite the interim order, Patanjali continued to sell camphor products.

During the hearings, Patanjali disclosed that products worth over ₹49.57 lakh had been sold by June 24. Although Patanjali’s director, Rajneesh Mishra, had apologized unconditionally in court in June, the court stated that Mishra could have faced jail time. However, it chose not to impose such a penalty to avoid jeopardizing his personal freedom. The court warned that if the ₹4 crore is not deposited within two weeks, Mishra would be immediately detained
