This resolution, confirmed during the board’s 140th governing body meeting, is part of a broader initiative to enhance assessment techniques, curriculum organization, and evaluation processes.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has unveiled several key reforms for the 2025-26 academic session, including the approval of basic, non-programmable calculators for Class 12 accountancy students. This decision, made during the 140th governing body meeting, is part of a broader effort to improve the assessment process, syllabus structure, and evaluation systems.

Guidelines for Calculator Use in Exams

Under the new guidelines, only basic calculators will be allowed in accountancy exams. These calculators will have simple functions like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentage calculations. CBSE will issue further instructions on the models that meet the criteria to maintain uniformity and prevent the use of advanced or programmable devices. This change aligns CBSE with international standards and supports the National Education Policy (NEP) by encouraging higher order thinking skill and reducing cognitive strain on students.

Digital Evaluation and New Re-Evaluation Process

In another significant development, CBSE has announced the implementation of On-Screen Marking (OSM) for digital evaluation of answer sheets. Initially, this system will be piloted in select subjects, allowing answer sheets to be scanned and uploaded for digital marking. This approach is expected to speed up the evaluation process and improve efficiency. The OSM system will be rolled out for both Classes 10 and 12, including science and mathematics supplementary exams and revaluation cases, starting in the 2024-25 academic session.

Additionally, CBSE has introduced a new re-evaluation process for students who are dissatisfied with their marks. This new system, beginning with the 2025 board exams, aims to make the re-evaluation process more transparent and provide a fairer way for students to appeal their results.

Changes to Vocational Subject Curriculum and Assessments

CBSE has also approved revisions to the curriculum and assessment structure for vocational (skill-based) subjects. The board plans to partner with an independent external agency specializing in vocational education and industry standards to assess these subjects, ensuring that assessments are in line with current industry practices.

Class 10 Students to Have Standard and Advanced Exam Options

Another notable change, set to begin in the 2026-27 academic session, is the introduction of both standard and advanced-level exams for science and social science subjects in Class 10. These exams will be held on the same day, with the advanced-level exams featuring more challenging questions and a longer duration, providing students with the opportunity to showcase a deeper understanding of the subjects.

With these comprehensive reforms, CBSE aims to enhance the overall examination experience, streamline the evaluation process, and align its assessment methods with global educational practices.
