The ongoing construction of the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro section has significantly impacted commuters in the Baner and Balewadi areas, transforming what was once a relatively easy commute into a daily struggle. Severe traffic jams, deteriorating road conditions, and perceived shortcomings in planning have created a frustrating experience for residents.

Many locals have reported significantly longer travel times, resulting in wasted hours stuck in traffic. This has not only increased vehicle operating costs but has also raised concerns about public health. The construction has damaged roads, creating uneven surfaces and broken sidewalks, further contributing to the heavy congestion that plagues the area daily.

The situation is further aggravated by delays in the completion of the Metro project. As the expected completion date slips further, the stress on commuters continues to rise, leading to growing dissatisfaction among residents.

Safety Risks and Poor Road Conditions

The construction has also raised serious safety concerns for residents. Many streets are poorly lit at night, making it dangerous for both drivers and pedestrians. Detours are often unmarked, forcing people to navigate unfamiliar and potentially dangerous routes. In some areas, inadequate barricading and a lack of warning signs in construction zones have increased the risk of accidents. These safety issues make traveling not only inconvenient but also hazardous for those living and working in the area.

Delayed Progress Despite Efforts

Despite the challenges, officials are confident that significant progress has been made on the project. Rinaj Pathan, the chief engineer for the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), reported that 84% of the construction is complete. The current focus is on finishing work and setting up entry structures at 14 stations, along with installing signaling and telecommunication systems at 12 other stations. Pathan expects all civil and systems work to be finished by the end of the year.

To address the traffic issues in the Hinjewadi area, roadwork is underway to improve traffic flow, and the viaduct construction is nearing completion. Authorities have instructed the Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited to reduce barricading in areas where the viaduct is finished, aiming to ease congestion.
