CBSE Revamps Syllabus & Exam Pattern for Classes 10 & 12: Key Changes Explained
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced major changes to the syllabus and exam structure for Classes 10 and 12. The updates focus on skill-based learning and flexible evaluation.
For Class 10, students must now choose one skill-based subject from Computer Applications, Information Technology, or Artificial Intelligence. They must also take either English or Hindi, which can be studied in Class 9 or 10.
A key change allows students who fail a core subject Science, Mathematics, Social Science, or a language to replace it with a passed skill-based or optional language subject for final result calculation.
Class 12 students will have four new skill-based electives: Land Transportation Associate, Electronics and Hardware, Physical Activity Trainer, and Design Thinking and Innovation. The revised syllabus includes seven learning areas: Languages, Humanities, Mathematics, Sciences, Skill Subjects, General Studies, and Health & Physical Education.
CBSE has also introduced a new 9-point grading system for both Class 10 and 12 board exams. Marks will now be converted into grades.
A major exam-related change affects Class 10 students, who will now take board exams twice a year, in February and April, starting this academic session. However, Class 12 exams will continue to be held once a year, with the 2026 exams scheduled to begin on February 17.
These changes aim to enhance skill development and improve students’ academic flexibility.
