Chaos on Mumbai-Nagpur Highway: Over 50 Vehicles Suffer Punctures, Commuters Stranded Overnight

Fallen Iron Board on Mumbai-Nagpur Highway Causes Punctures to Over 50 Vehicles
Panic erupted along the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Highway on the night of December 29 after over 50 vehicles sustained punctures caused by an iron board that had fallen on the road.
The incident occurred around 10 PM between the Malegaon and Vanoja toll plazas in Washim district, affecting both four-wheelers and cargo trucks. This led to a massive traffic jam on the highway, with many commuters stranded overnight as assistance was delayed. Authorities are investigating whether the iron board fell accidentally or was deliberately placed on the road.
The incident has further raised concerns about safety on the high-speed corridor. Earlier in June, six people lost their lives and four were injured in a collision between two cars near Kadwanchi village on the Samruddhi Highway in Jalna district.
The Samruddhi Mahamarg is a partially operational, 701-km-long, six-lane access-controlled expressway in Maharashtra. Connecting Mumbai to Nagpur, the state’s third-largest city, it is one of India’s longest greenfield road projects and was constructed at a cost of ₹55,000 crore.
