Controversial Image Sparks Debate Ahead of Lok Sabha Election in Assam
A picture of Benjamin Basumatary, allegedly a member of United People’s Party Liberal’s (UPPL), sleeping with a large sum of money has sparked debate in Assam ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.
The image, showing Basumatary lying on a bed with a stack of 500 rupee notes, wearing only a traditional towel, has stirred controversy. While its authenticity remains unverified, sources close to Basumatary suggest it was circulated for political gain during the elections.
UPPL has distanced itself from the incident, confirming Basumatary’s suspension and removal from his post in the Village Council Development Committee (VCDC). UPPL spokesperson Pramod Bohra stated, “The disciplinary action was recommended by the Harish Sinha block committee, leading to Basumatary’s suspension on January 10th.”
Furthermore, the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) took action by suspending and removing Basumatary from the position of VCDC chairman on February 10, 2024. Bohra emphasized that Basumatary’s actions are his responsibility and urged media and social media users not to associate him with UPPL.
“The party holds no accountability for his conduct,” Bohra stated in a post on X. The BTC government also revoked Basumatary from the VCDC chairman position, reaffirming the party’s stance.
As the Lok Sabha election nears, the controversy surrounding Basumatary’s image has brought attention to political dynamics in Assam, stirring debate among citizens and stakeholders alike.
