For improving security, the University of Delhi (DU) will soon offer non-tearable polythene degrees with a hidden image and an invisible ink logo. In addition to adding more security measures to prevent copying and forgeries, DU has chosen to highlight the mother’s name on the degree.
After the UGC mandated in 2014 that a mother’s name be included on any degree or certificate issued by a college, institute, or university, the decision to include a mother’s name has gained significant attention. The directive was issued by the UGC to assist children of single, divorced, and separated mothers in avoiding the humiliation that comes with having their father’s name listed in the column.
In addition to the student’s name and coloured photo, the mother’s name will be printed on the DU degrees that will be awarded at the 2024 convocation.
According to a senior Delhi University official, the decision was overdue. In addition to the improved security features, this major modification will be made to the degree. Numerous students who were raised by single mothers contacted the university to request that their mother’s name be added to their degree. The University responded to their requests individually, but this year they integrated it into the degree to provide a long-term fix. The directive is more about treating mothers and parents in general with the respect they deserve.
Added security features will make it easier to identify authentic certificates. In addition, these certifications will withstand heat, be waterproof, resistant to a variety of chemicals, and retain their quality and colour even at 200 degrees Celsius.
Furthermore, the senior DU official added that DU intends to alter the graduation trencher, or gown, that is worn during the convocation ceremony. They are creating an ethnic traditional Indian costume that can be worn during the convocation ceremony to add an Indian touch. Students will be able to showcase their rich Indian culture with this.
