Documentary on Indrani Mukerjea Delayed as Bombay High Court Orders Special Screening for CBI
The release of the Netflix documentary, “The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth,” which focuses on ”The former media boss accused of murdering her 25-year-old daughter, has hit a roadblock.” The Bombay High Court has directed Netflix to organize a special screening for officials from the ”Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the agency investigating the Sheena Bora murder case.” The documentary was set to be ”released tomorrow,” has been postponed indefinitely based on recent reports.
The court presided over by Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Manjusha Deshpande, emphasized the need for CBI officials and lawyers to attend this screening, ”Postponing the release until next Thursday’s hearing will result in the documentary not being accessible to the public this month.”
Earlier, the CBI had sought a delay in the documentary’s release until the murder trial was concluded. In response, the court questioned Netflix’s reluctance to share the documentary with the CBI, asserting that both the prosecution and the victim’s side have rights in such cases.
According to reports, Netflix’s defence, led by Senior Advocate Ravi Kadam, initially argued ”Against the screening, citing concerns about pre-censorship and suggesting that the CBI should have raised the issue earlier.” However, the court, acknowledging that the trial is ongoing, recommended a one-week deferral, stating, “Heavens are not going to fall.”
During the proceedings, Kadam informed the court that five witnesses, including Indrani’s son Mikhail and her daughter from a second marriage, Vidhie Mukerjea, had been interviewed for the series. Despite the earlier rejection of the CBI’s plea by a special court, the Bombay High Court’s decision now delays the release of the docuseries.
The Sheena Bora murder case dates back to April 2012, with allegations that Indrani, along with her driver Shyamvar Rai and former husband Sanjeev Khanna, strangled Sheena to death. The case gained public attention in 2015, leading to arrests and subsequent bail for the accused, including Indrani Mukerjea.
