A post about a dosa seller who earns 6 lakhs rupees per month surpassing many white-collar professionals is trending on the internet.

A Dosa vendor reportedly earns a monthly income of Rs 6 lakh, surpassing that of many white-collar professionals, yet does not contribute to tax revenues. The post has received varied reactions from netizens.

Discussions arose regarding the tax responsibilities of self-employed individuals and the necessity for improved tax compliance in informal sectors, particularly in light of comparisons made with salaried employees who are subject to a 10% tax rate.

Naveen Kopparam, a user on platform X, disclosed that a dosa vendor located near his residence generates a daily income of Rs 20,000, which totals Rs 6 lakh per month. After accounting for expenses, the vendor is said to net between Rs 3 lakh and Rs 3.5 lakh each month. This recent revelation has sparked conversations on social media regarding income inequality and tax responsibilities in India. The post has gained significant traction, leading to debates about the pros and cons of salaried positions compared to self-employment.

The comparison with a salaried employee making Rs 60,000 a month heightened the debate. Kopparam pointed out that these workers pay around 10 percent of their income in taxes, while self-employed people, like street vendors, often do so without any tax responsibilities.

English speaking Twitteratti shld comedown from highhorse as if country is running bcoz they file itr,”

“That is the problem. When UPI was introduced & due to demonetization became pretty much common than I had thought now Government has direct data unlike major cash payments earlier so it will be easy to bring the street vendors into the ambit of income tax but the govt never followed through & is just happy with the increase in 0 income ITRs,” says another user.

Kopparam further revealed that a dosa seller located near his residence generates a daily income of Rs 20,000, which totals Rs 6 lakh each month. After expenses are accounted for, the vendor retains a monthly profit of Rs 3 to 3.5 lakh, all while avoiding tax obligations.
