Weather Update | May 22, 2025 — India is currently witnessing a severe weather crisis as blistering heatwaves and intense pre-monsoon storms strike simultaneously across the nation. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued storm alerts for 31 states and union territories, including Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.

As per the latest update, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected in several regions, while heatwave warnings remain active in specific areas experiencing soaring temperatures. On Wednesday evening, a sudden shift in weather conditions impacted Uttar Pradesh, where heavy storms and rain lashed 12 cities, including Meerut and Agra. The severe weather led to the death of 20 people across 11 districts due to incidents involving lightning, falling trees, and collapsing walls.

In Chhattisgarh, lightning strikes claimed four lives, including a father and son in Balrampur, while one person died in the MCB district. The IMD has placed 10 districts under an orange alert for thunderstorms today.

Delhi-NCR also witnessed a heavy storm with rain and hail around 8 PM on Wednesday, toppling trees and electric poles, blocking roads and disrupting normal life. The weather also impacted Delhi Metro services and led to delays of over 50 flights, with 10 flights diverted to Jaipur and one to Mumbai.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan remains gripped by extreme heat, with 17 districts under heatwave alert. On Wednesday, three cities from the state were listed among India’s top five hottest placesSri Ganganagar topped the chart at 47.6°C, making it the hottest city in the country. Temperatures are expected to rise further, possibly touching 48°C in some areas over the next two days.

The IMD continues to monitor the situation and urges citizens to remain alert, avoid travel during peak heat hours, and follow safety advisories during thunderstorms.
