In a major push to improve rail connectivity between Mumbai and Pune, the Central Railway is advancing the ambitious Karjat–Lonavala double line project. This new alignment is set to significantly reduce travel time and enhance the efficiency of train operations between the two major cities.
The Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the double line have already been submitted to the Railway Board for approval. The project includes the construction of several tunnels and bridges, with some structures shared by both tracks while others will be built separately for each line.
Though the current rail route stretches 26 kilometers, the proposed new alignment will be nearly double in length. This increase in distance is strategic—it ensures better gradient alignment and eliminates the need for banker engines, which are currently used to help trains climb steep slopes. This change alone is expected to save up to 40 minutes of travel time.
Another key feature of the project is the development of new stations along the route. These new stops are expected to stimulate regional growth and bring in more investment opportunities.
Once completed, the Karjat–Lonavala double line will allow for more frequent train services, easing congestion and making daily travel between Mumbai and Pune faster and more reliable.
