Faster Travel Ahead: Rs.1,100 Crore Corridor Linking MTHL, Mumbai-Pune Expressway by 2027

Mumbai-Pune Expressway Widening Delayed Due to Funding Constraints
Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced that the Rs 1,100-crore elevated corridor project, designed to link the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) with the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, will be completed by February 2027. The ambitious infrastructure initiative aims to enhance regional connectivity, reduce congestion, and support economic growth in Maharashtra.
Key Highlights of the Elevated Corridor Project
- Two Major Elevated Sections:
- A 4,958-metre corridor from Chirle to Gavan Phata via the JNPT–Panvel National Highway (NH-348).
- A 1,700-metre corridor from Palaspe Phata to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway via the Old Mumbai-Pune National Highway (NH-48).
- Six-Lane Expansion:
- The project includes the construction of a six-lane elevated corridor over NH-348 and NH-48, ensuring smoother traffic movement.
- Service roads will be reconstructed, and NH-48 will be widened to six lanes to accommodate increasing traffic demands.
A Game-Changer for Maharashtra’s Transport Infrastructure
Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, described the project as “transformative,” highlighting its role in reshaping regional transportation.
“By seamlessly integrating Atal Setu with the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, we are ensuring efficient traffic dispersal and eliminating congestion at crucial junctions, particularly on NH-348, which carries a significant load of multi-axle container traffic from JNPT,” said Mukherjee.
The project, awarded to Gawar Construction Ltd at a cost of Rs 1,102.75 crore, has already commenced excavation work, marking the start of this significant infrastructure development.
Boosting Mobility and Economic Growth
The elevated corridors will not only decongest key highways but also make commuting between Mumbai and Pune more efficient. Mukherjee emphasized that the initiative will enable professionals to reside in Pune while working in Mumbai, enhancing economic opportunities and improving the quality of life.
With Maharashtra’s growing prominence as an economic hub, this project is expected to play a vital role in strengthening infrastructure, reducing travel time, and supporting commercial activities. The MMRDA believes that the development will solidify the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s status as a major economic powerhouse.
