Fearing Family Backlash, Mumbai Woman Inserts Blade into Private Parts After Alleged Rape
A 20-year-old woman, afraid of facing consequences from her parents, inserted a surgical blade and stones into her private parts after being raped by an auto-rickshaw driver in Mumbai earlier this week. The auto driver was arrested on rape charges, but police say the investigation revealed a more complicated story.
The situation came to light when the woman, who lives in Nalasopara in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, reached out to authorities from Ram Mandir railway station in Goregaon. She claimed that an auto driver had assaulted her after initially stating to the police that she had traveled to Mumbai by train earlier that day.
However, as the investigation progressed, the woman disclosed that she had gone to Arnala Beach in Virar with the auto driver. They were unable to find accommodation in a guest house due to her lack of identification, so they decided to spend the night on the beach.
The woman alleged that the driver raped her there and then fled.
Worried about facing her parents’ punishment when she got home, the woman told the police that she bought a surgical blade and inserted it, along with some stones, into her private parts. Afterward, she went to the railway station but sought medical help due to the intense pain she was experiencing.
At the hospital, the doctors had to remove the foreign objects from her body in an emergency surgery. She reported a rape case against the autorickshaw driver. When she regained consciousness, the police took her statement but found several inconsistencies. As they questioned her further, the whole situation came to the fore.
Initially, she said she was an orphan, but later her father came forward, contradicting her statement. He told the police that she had previously reported a rape against two people in 2023.
After an extensive search, the police arrested the autorickshaw driver, known as Raj Ratan, on Thursday night. They are still investigating the incident and the discrepancies in the woman’s statements.
