Film producer arrested for allegedly smuggling drugs worth ₹ 2,000 crores
A film producer was detained on suspicion of smuggling drugs worth more than ₹2,000 crore out of the nation. The Narcotics Control Bureau said on Saturday that Jaffer Sadiq, a former DMK official who has experience in the South Korean film industry, was taken into custody after a four-month manhunt.
Sadiq has been dubbed the “kingpin” of the drug trafficking network involving Australia, New Zealand, and India by the NCB. It claimed that he had smuggled drugs worth ₹ 2,000 crores into Australia and New Zealand.
A senior official claimed that over 45 times, he had shipped 3,500 kg of pseudoephedrine overseas.
With his most recent movie set for release this month, Sadiq has already helmed four motion pictures.
One week prior to his apprehension, authorities had taken ₹180 crore’s worth of methamphetamine from two Madurai train passengers and a Chennai dump yard. The intention was to smuggle the drugs into Sri Lanka.
On February 29, authorities in Chennai said that they had seized 36 kg from the passenger couple and an additional 6 kg from the Kodungaiyur dump yard. The seizure was followed by the couple’s arrest.
Methamphetamine, sometimes referred to as “ice” or “crystal meth,” is a highly addictive psychostimulant drug that can have fatal consequences. It produces strong euphoric effects akin to those of cocaine.
After the drug bust, the state chief of the BJP attacked the ruling DMK, claiming that Tamil Nadu has turned into India’s drug capital.
