Flamingos Are Back! Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary, 100 km from Pune, Welcomes Migratory Season!
Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary, often called the “Bharatpur of Maharashtra,” is located around 100 km from Pune, near the backwaters of Ujani Dam. Covering the areas of Kumbhargaon and Diksal, this sanctuary offers a paradise for bird enthusiasts, photographers, and nature lovers. During the migratory season, particularly between November and March, over 230 bird species can be spotted here, with flamingos being the main attraction. Other commonly sighted species include herons, egrets, storks, cormorants, and painted storks, along with various species of ducks, raptors, and waders.

The highlight of Bhigwan is the large population of Greater and Lesser Flamingos, which migrate from regions as far as the Rann of Kutch and Africa. Their elegant movements, striking pink plumage, and tendency to form large flocks create an enchanting visual across the shallow waters, providing ample opportunities for photography and birdwatching. These flamingos feed on algae and crustaceans, which thrive in the brackish waters, giving their feathers that distinctive pink hue.

The sanctuary’s landscape includes shallow water areas, open grasslands, and mudflats, providing ideal habitats for various bird species. Local guides and boat tours are available to offer an immersive experience, taking visitors close to birding hotspots while maintaining a respectful distance. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times to visit, as bird activity is at its peak during these hours, and the soft lighting is perfect for photography.
The sanctuary also plays an important role in conservation and awareness, attracting environmentalists and researchers who study migratory patterns and ecosystems. Its proximity to cities like Pune and Mumbai makes it an accessible and rewarding weekend getaway for nature lovers looking to explore Maharashtra’s natural beauty.
For those visiting, it’s recommended to bring binoculars, cameras, sunscreen, and plenty of water, and to wear neutral-colored clothing to blend into the environment.
