From Classrooms to Smart Homes: How The Lexicon Schools Build Young Innovators Through R&D

While most students discover R&D only after school, Lexiconites start from Class VI!
Our Class VI learners recently explored Smart Home Automation, designing working models, analyzing surveys and linking their research to global SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).
At Lexicon, Research & Development is the backbone of everything we do.

“At Lexicon, R&D is more than an academic requirement—it is a culture. We nurture curiosity, innovation and problem-solving from an early stage so that our students are not just prepared for the future, but ready to shape it.” Says Mrs. Anju Luthra, Deputy Director, The Lexicon Schools

This holistic approach to R&D—integrating research, innovation and application—is what sets The Lexicon Schools apart, creating a generation of thinkers, doers and innovators.

Where Research & Development becomes the backbone of learning

At The Lexicon Schools, Research & Development (R&D) is not a separate activity, but the very backbone of teaching and learning. Unlike most institutions where R&D exposure comes only after higher education, Lexicon introduces its students to the world of research, innovation and critical thinking right from Class VI to XII.

In a recent Class VI R&D (The Lexicon International School, Kalyaninagar) showcase on “Automated Home Devices”, learners demonstrated how research builds real-world connections. They conducted surveys and questionnaires, analyzed responses using pie charts and data tools and designed working models. One such innovation used an Arduino-based sensor system that automatically switched off lights when sunlight entered the room—reflecting both creativity and sustainability.

Students also explored global case studies such as Samsung’s Smart Community in Sweden and Philips Hue Smart Lighting, linking classroom learning to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) like Affordable & Clean Energy and Sustainable Cities. A webinar by Mr. Mandar Sawant, industry leader in automation, further enriched the experience.
