South Pune’s Long-Standing Water Woes Near Resolution
South Pune, which has faced a severe water crisis for nearly two decades, is finally witnessing progress in its long-pending water supply projects. Despite several overhead water tanks being constructed over the years, most remained non-functional as pipelines were never connected, leaving thousands of residents struggling for daily water needs.
Many former corporators failed to take responsibility for pushing the projects forward, causing years of delay. However, local leader Nana took the initiative to pursue the pending work, ensuring that water supply pipelines were laid and operational hurdles addressed.
The Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Tank at Kalepadal, with a capacity of 20 lakh liters, has now started supplying water to Handewadi and Kalepadal. Similarly, the Bhujbal Tank in Handewadi, where construction had been stalled for four years, has resumed work and reached 60 percent completion after continuous follow-up.

Other tanks, including the overhead water tank behind Desai Hospital and the D-Mart tank, which were earlier constructed but non-functional, are also in focus. Authorities expect supply from these tanks to begin within the next nine months.

The initiative has brought relief to areas like Hingol Ambika Society, Rajiv Gandhi Colony, and Tarawade Vasti. These societies, located on higher gradients, had long been deprived of water. Thanks to persistent follow-up, water distribution issues in these localities have been resolved to a significant extent, marking a crucial step toward ending South Pune’s water crisis.
