You know guava—a fruit everyone knows about—but surprisingly, it’s not eaten as widely as it deserves to be. Unlike mangoes, which steal the spotlight every summer, guava quietly offers an impressive range of health benefits that could make a huge difference for the nation’s well-being. According to Dr. Shubham Vatsya, gastroenterologist and hepatologist with over a decade of experience at Fortis Vasant Kunj, “If guava were as popular as mangoes, India would see a significant drop in vitamin C deficiency and related health problems.”

In a video shared on Instagram on October 29, 2025, Dr. Vatsya explained why guava deserves a place in everyone’s daily diet. “Guava is loaded with vitamin C, antioxidants, flavonoids, and other nutrients that support overall health. It’s nature’s powerhouse packed into a single fruit,” he said.

Why guava deserves more attention

Dr. Vatsya highlighted several reasons why guava is a must-have for a healthier lifestyle:

1. Vitamin C

Guava contains nearly four times more vitamin C than oranges. “This vitamin helps maintain clean arteries and slows down atherosclerosis—the buildup of plaque in blood vessels—which makes it excellent for heart health,” he explained.

2. Fibre

Rich in soluble fibre, guava can help regulate cholesterol levels, further supporting cardiovascular wellness.

3. Potassium

The potassium in guava helps stabilize blood pressure, keeping the heart and circulatory system in check.

4. Antioxidants

Guava contains powerful antioxidants, including lycopene and flavonoids, which protect cells from oxidative damage. “These compounds help prevent DNA damage and may lower the risk of certain cancers,” Dr. Vatsya added.

5. Insulin sensitivity

With a low glycemic index and bioactive compounds that improve insulin sensitivity, guava is particularly beneficial for individuals managing diabetes.

6. Digestive health and acidity

Guava can reduce acidity and help protect the stomach lining, lowering the risk of ulcers and supporting overall gut health.

Dr. Vatsya concluded, “Incorporating guava into your diet isn’t just about enjoying a tasty fruit—it’s about giving your body a natural shield against fatigue, ageing, and chronic diseases. If we paid guava the same attention as mangoes, the health of the nation would improve remarkably.”
