In a significant move, the Indian government has directed all major higher educational institutes and schools to make learning material available in Indian languages over the next three years.

This directive includes textbooks and study materials for all courses listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.

The decision aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasizes providing learning opportunities in vernacular languages, believing that studying in one’s mother tongue facilitates innovative thinking without language barriers.

The NEP-2020 underscores the multilingual nature of India as a significant asset, and the government aims to utilize it efficiently for the socio-cultural, economic, and educational development of the nation.

The directive extends to educational regulators such as UGC, AICTE, NCERT, NIOS, IGNOU, as well as major institutions like IITs, central universities, and NITs. These entities are tasked with making study material available in Indian languages for all courses within the stipulated three-year timeframe.

The government’s official statement highlights the inclusion of books in various disciplines such as law, medicine, engineering, skill-related courses, undergraduate, and postgraduate programs.

Moreover, it emphasizes that learning materials for school students have been made available on the DIKSHA portal in more than 30 regional languages. The Ministry of Education believes that this move will contribute to the promotion of multilingualism in education, aligning with the broader goals of the NEP-2020.

The ultimate vision is to harness the country’s multilingual diversity as a driving force for India’s development, aiming for the status of a developed nation by 2047.
