In a recent move, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has identified 256 universities that have not complied with the directive to appoint an ombudsperson under the University Grants Commission (Redressal of Grievances of Students) Regulations, 2023.

The regulatory body had initially requested universities to make these appointments within 30 days of the notification released on April 12, 2023.

17 state and 9 private universities across Maharashtra failed to appoint an ombudsperson to address student grievances.

Despite subsequent reminders, including a notification on December 5, 2023, emphasizing the urgency of the matter, these universities failed to appoint an ombudsperson.

Among the defaulting institutions are renowned names like Jadavpur University, Anna University, Delhi Teachers’ University, and BR Ambedkar University.

The list also encompasses esteemed law colleges, including the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, Maharashtra National Law University in Mumbai, and Nagpur.

According to UGC guidelines, universities and their affiliated colleges are mandated to display the particulars and contact details of the ombudsperson and students’ grievance redressal committee (SGRC) on their websites and at prominent locations on their campuses. The UGC’s proactive stance emphasizes the importance of grievance redressal mechanisms for students’ welfare and institutional accountability.
