To address the growing issue of air pollution, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has initiated the GRAP (Graded Response Action Plan) project. This comprehensive initiative aims to systematically manage air quality, implement targeted measures, and ensure a healthier environment for residents.

As part of the GRAP system, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has initiated robust measures to combat environmental pollution. A dedicated agency has been appointed to monitor and control various environmental violations and waste-related issues. The team comprises one project manager, four supervisors, two data entry operators, and 39 field personnel. Using eco-friendly vehicles, these officials will conduct continuous patrols across the city, both day and night.

Monitoring Air Quality Through the GRAP System

1. Advanced Forecasting System : Under phases two, three, and four of the GRAP system, enhanced air quality predictions will be initiated three days in advance using C-DAC’s Decision Support System. Suggested measures will remain in effect for a minimum of 15 days or until significant improvement in the Air Quality Index (AQI) is observed. Based on C-DAC’s forecasts, the municipal corporation will focus on pollutants such as PM 2.5, PM 10, NOx, and SOx across all city areas.

2. Strict Vehicle Pollution Monitoring : A robust mechanism has been established to monitor vehicular pollution, involving ANPR cameras and on-ground personnel. This integrated system will track Emission Control Compliance (ECC) using data provided by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and traffic police.

3. Industrial and Construction Pollution Oversight: A dedicated agency has been appointed to monitor industrial and construction-related pollution. It has deployed 32 field personnel across eight wards to ensure continuous surveillance and address violations effectively.

Significance of the GRAP Project:

1. Active Air Quality Management: GRAP facilitates preemptive measures based on air quality index forecasts, effectively reducing pollution risks.

2. Structured Approach: It involves a phased response plan to address varying levels of air pollution, from moderate to severe.

3. Public Health Protection: Direct interventions on major pollution sources help mitigate health risks associated with poor air quality.

4. Improvement in Urban Living Standards: Citizen participation and diverse strategies implemented under GRAP contribute to enhanced quality of life.
