Mumbai / Pune / Nashik / Kolhapur / Sangli / Sindhudurg, August 20, 2025: Continuous heavy rainfall has disrupted normal life across Maharashtra, with Mumbai, Vasai-Virar, Pune, Nashik, Kolhapur, Sangli, and Sindhudurg witnessing severe impact. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued Orange Alerts for several districts, urging residents to remain cautious.

Mumbai Rain Update

  • After three consecutive days of torrential downpour, Mumbai witnessed some relief on Wednesday morning, though skies remain overcast.
  • On Tuesday, heavy showers disrupted local train services and monorail operations, causing major inconvenience to commuters.
  • Waterlogging was reported at multiple locations, especially in the western suburbs.
  • The Harbour line services have resumed, but trains on the Western Railway are still running 20–25 minutes late due to water on tracks in Vasai and Nalasopara.
  • Mumbai has already received 501 mm of rainfall in just three days, equal to the city’s entire August average.

Pune Rain & Khadakwasla Dam Release

  • Continuous rainfall in the Khadakwasla dam catchment area has led to an increase in water discharge from 35,000 cusecs to 39,000 cusecs into the Mula-Mutha river.
  • Residents living along riverbanks have been issued flood warnings.
  • Current water stock in Pune’s major dams:
    • Khadakwasla – 86.99%
    • Temghar – 100%
    • Varasgaon – 97.97%
    • Panshet – 98.24%
    • Chasakman – 100%
    • Pavna Dam- 100%
    • Mulshi – 96.5%

Vasai-Virar Floods

  • Streets across Vasai-Virar remained waterlogged, forcing schools and colleges to remain shut.
  • Societies and houses reported water seepage, while several internal roads were submerged.
  • Authorities have advised citizens to step out only if necessary due to the ongoing Orange Alert.

Nashik Rain & Gangapur Dam Discharge

  • Heavy overnight showers in Nashik and its catchment areas have led to controlled water discharge from Gangapur dam.
  • Release began at 8 am with 500 cusecs and was scaled up to 1,500 cusecs by 9 am.
  • District authorities have warned riverside residents to stay alert.

Kolhapur Flood Alert

  • The Panchganga river crossed the warning level at 39 feet 5 inches, submerging 85 bridges across the district.
  • Authorities have appealed to citizens to avoid movement near flood-prone zones.
  • Radhanagari dam gates have been partially shut, signaling a slight reduction in rainfall over the Ghats.

Sangli Situation

  • In Sangli’s Palus taluka, the Amanapur bridge was submerged and closed for traffic after continuous overnight rain.

Sindhudurg & Konkan Coast

  • The Konkan region is witnessing heavy rain with strong winds.
  • High tides with 3–3.5 metre waves are expected, prompting warnings to fishermen against venturing into the sea.
  • Several bridges in Karly river’s catchment area remain underwater.

Public Advisory: IMD has maintained an Orange Alert for Mumbai, Palghar, Pune, Nashik, Kolhapur, Sangli, and Sindhudurg. Citizens are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, stay updated with official alerts, and exercise caution in low-lying areas.
