Pune Schools Remain Open on August 20; Holiday Declared in Lonavala, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Panvel Due to Heavy Rain
Pune, Aug 20, 2025 – While several parts of Maharashtra have announced school holidays in view of heavy rainfall and a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), schools in Pune city will remain open today. No order has been issued by the Pune district administration or local authorities regarding closure of schools on August 20.
The Lonavala Municipal Council has declared a two-day holiday for all schools within its jurisdiction on August 20 and 21, after IMD issued a red alert for the ghat sections of Pune district. Similarly, the Thane Municipal Corporation, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, and Panvel Municipal Corporation have also announced a holiday for schools today, citing safety concerns amid heavy downpour.
Meanwhile, in Mumbai, a notice claiming that schools have been closed on August 20 went viral on social media last night. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has clarified that the notice is fake and that no such decision has been taken. Schools and colleges in Mumbai are expected to operate as usual today.
Heavy rainfall across Maharashtra is linked to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal and the strengthening of monsoon winds. Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to remain cautious.
