Mumbai: A high-speed crash on the Atal Setu bridge claimed the life of a 28-year-old man in the early hours of Friday. The deceased, identified as Punit Singh Majra, a resident of Chembur and son of a real estate agent, was driving a rented BMW X1 SUV at a reported speed of 180 kmph when he lost control and rammed into a stationary dumper around 2:30 am.

The accident occurred on the northbound lane towards Panvel. CCTV footage and preliminary inquiries suggest that Majra was speeding when the crash took place. The impact was so severe that the SUV’s wreckage got entangled with the loaded dumper, damaging both vehicles.

Trapped in the Wreckage

Passersby alerted the police control room. The Sewree police, along with the highway quick response squad, rushed to the scene. Due to the force of the collision, the vehicle was extensively mangled, with only the boot door accessible.

Investigation Underway

Police located Majra’s personal details through an identity card found at the scene and informed his family. His blood samples have been sent for forensic testing to determine if alcohol consumption was involved.

A case has been registered against the deceased under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including death due to negligencerash driving, and endangering life and personal safety, based on the dumper driver’s complaint.

However, authorities clarified that CCTV footage and a detailed mechanical inspection of the vehicle are underway to rule out any technical failure as a contributing factor.
