RBI to Release New Rs 20 Banknotes Featuring Governor Sanjay Malhotra’s Signature
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced on May 17, 2025, that it will soon issue new Rs 20 banknotes under the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series, now bearing the signature of the current Governor, Sanjay Malhotra.
The central bank clarified that the new notes will retain the same design, color, and security features as the existing Rs 20 notes in circulation, ensuring seamless recognition and use for the public. The only change will be the governor’s signature, reflecting the recent leadership transition at the RBI.
“All previously issued Rs 20 banknotes will continue to remain legal tender,” the RBI confirmed in its official statement.
This issuance follows the RBI’s standard practice of updating currency notes whenever there is a change in its governor. Sanjay Malhotra assumed office as the RBI Governor in December 2024, succeeding his predecessor.
The Rs 20 denomination is a commonly used note across the country, featuring a greenish-yellow base color and iconic images such as the Ellora Caves on the reverse side, highlighting India’s rich cultural heritage.
This move ensures continuity in currency design while incorporating the signature of the current RBI head, maintaining public confidence and currency authenticity.
