On multilane highways, the rightmost lane has a specific purpose: it is the overtaking lane. This is the lane where vehicles are allowed to pick up the highest speed — but only temporarily. Drivers must use this lane strictly for overtaking slower vehicles and then shift back to the middle lane once the maneuver is complete. Staying in the right lane for long durations is not just discouraged but considered dangerous for everyone on the road. It disrupts traffic flow and creates unpredictable situations for faster-moving vehicles.
For drivers travelling at a steady, moderate pace, the middle lane is the most suitable choice. Often called the balance lane, it offers the smoothest and most stable driving experience. It is neither too fast nor too slow, which is why most cars naturally settle here. When the majority of vehicles follow this practice, the entire highway operates more efficiently, keeping traffic movement organized and comfortable.
Meanwhile, the leftmost lane is designed for slower vehicles such as trucks, goods carriers, buses, or cars that prefer to move at a lower speed. Switching impulsively from the left lane to the right without checking for fast-approaching vehicles can be incredibly dangerous. The right lane usually carries the quickest traffic, and sudden lane changes can easily lead to collisions.
