How to Build a Career in Aviation: New DGCA Proposal Lets Arts & Commerce Students Aim for Pilot Seats

New DGCA proposal opens doors to students from all streams, expanding career options in a rapidly growing sector

India’s aviation sector is taking flight, not just in size, but in inclusivity. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has proposed a major policy shift that could allow students from arts and commerce backgrounds to pursue Commercial Pilot Licenses (CPL). This breaks away from the traditional norm, where only science stream students (with Physics and Maths in Class 12) could enroll. If approved by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the move could significantly broaden access to pilot training.

Path to Becoming a Commercial Pilot

After completing Class 12 (now possibly from any stream if the new rule is passed), the key steps are:

  1. Join a DGCA-approved Flying Training Organisation (FTO)
Begin with ground school, where you’ll prepare for DGCA exams like Air Navigation, Air Regulation, and Meteorology. These exams require 70% marks to pass and usually take 6–12 months to complete.
  2. Flight Training
You’ll begin training on light aircraft like Cessna 152 or 172, logging 200 flying hours. This hands-on phase builds core flight skills.
  3. Apply for Commercial Pilot License (CPL)
You must be above 18 years to qualify. After passing your written exams and completing the required flying hours, you receive your CPL — and the symbolic three stripes.
  4. Type Rating
To fly commercial jets like the Airbus A320 or Boeing 737, type rating is required. This includes:
    • Duration: 2 to 3 months
    • Mode: Simulator + 1 live flight
    • Cost: ₹12–20 lakh (if done independently)
Alternatively, joining airline cadet programmes (like those by IndiGo or Air India) offers a comprehensive package including CPL, type rating, and often a job offer. These programmes may cost ₹1–1.2 crore but offer a safer route for many aspiring pilots.

Career Options Beyond Flying: Aviation Management

Aviation isn’t just about flying planes. The field of Aviation Management offers vast opportunities across various domains such as:

IMG-20250324-WA0012
  • Airport Management
  • Air Traffic Control
  • Ground Handling & Airport Hospitality
  • Aircraft Maintenance Management
  • Freight & Cargo Operations
  • Fueling and Credit Control Management
  • Airport Systems & Duty Management

Eligibility

  • UG Courses: 10+2 from a recognized board with 50% marks, usually in Science stream
  • PG Courses: Graduate with minimum 50%, with exams like GATE, TANCET, AP PGECET, PU CET for some institutes

Cabin Crew & Ground Staff Roles

These positions are open to students from any stream Arts, Commerce, or Science. Key skills include strong communication, grooming, and service orientation. Training is usually offered by aviation academies or airlines directly.

Why This Matters

India is one of the fastest-growing aviation markets globally. A broader eligibility criterion for CPL and other roles will not only align India with international standards, but also help bridge the growing demand for aviation professionals across sectors.

If you’ve dreamt of the skies whether in the cockpit, on the ground, or behind the operations, now is your moment to board.
