Illegal Banners Continue To Plague Pune, PMC's Efforts Fall Short
Despite the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) claims of taking action against illegal banners and hoardings, the city continues to be defaced by these unwanted structures. The civic body’s efforts to tackle the issue have been criticized for being slow and ineffective.
According to PMC officials, a special drive has been launched to target materials defacing public areas, resulting in a fine of Rs 1.5 lakh being collected and letters issued to file criminal offenses in 20 cases. However, activists and citizens argue that these efforts are insufficient and that the problem persists.
“The action seems to be futile,” said activist Sanjay Shitole while talking to the media. “The banners and boards have appeared in different spots, defacing the city and creating trouble for pedestrians.” Shitole emphasized the need for the administration to take action against printing presses and flex makers, making it mandatory for them to display permission details prominently.
Another activist, Madhav Patil, while speaking to the media person pointed out that the civic administration tends to ignore small-sized publicity materials, which have proliferated after the polls. “These banners are not only an eyesore but also a threat to flora and fauna, as they are often placed on trees,” Patil said.
Citizens on the condition of anonymity told that they are concerned about the safety hazards posed by these banners. “Many are placed near traffic signals, blocking clear sight for two-wheeler riders and four-wheeler drivers”.
The PMC’s slow response to the issue has raised questions about the effectiveness of their efforts. With the city’s residents and activists calling for more stringent action, it remains to be seen whether the PMC will step up its efforts to tackle the problem of illegal banners and hoardings.
