The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has made history by releasing a health-focused manifesto for the Maharashtra assembly elections. This groundbreaking document tackles critical healthcare issues that have long needed attention. At the forefront are Assaults on Healthcare Workers, ensuring safety and protection for medical professionals, and Biomedical Waste Management, effective disposal and management of hazardous medical waste .
The manifesto also prioritizes Resident Doctors’ Working Conditions, aiming to improve their work environment and reduce burnout. Additionally, it addresses the Quality of Medicines, ensuring access to high-quality, affordable medications. Other key areas include Hospital Registration Processes, streamlining registration and licensing procedures, and Fire Safety Approvals, enhancing fire safety measures in healthcare facilities .
Furthermore, the manifesto focuses on Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY), strengthening the state’s health insurance scheme, Medical Education Reforms, improving medical education standards and accessibility, and Maharashtra Medical Council’s Governance, enhancing transparency and accountability in medical governance .
Dr. Dinesh Thakur, President of IMA Maharashtra, stressed the state government’s moral duty to provide quality, affordable healthcare and ensure a safe environment for doctors and healthcare institutions. The IMA plans to meet with each political candidate to emphasize the importance of this agenda, engaging local candidates on these issues .
With over 400,000 allopathic doctors nationwide and 50,000 doctors across 227 branches in Maharashtra, the IMA represents a substantial segment of healthcare providers. Given the private sector’s significant role in delivering approximately 70% of healthcare in Maharashtra, the IMA’s advocacy is poised to have a profound impact .
