Complaint lodged by National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People accuses cricketers of mocking disabilities

In a recent development, the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP) has lodged a complaint against cricketers Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, and Suresh Raina over a controversial video. The video, which has now been deleted from Instagram, featured the trio engaging in awkward movements while grooving to the song “Tauba Tauba,” sparking allegations of mocking people with disabilities.

The complaint is filed by the executive director of NCPEDP, at the Amar Colony police station in New Delhi. It also names Sandhya Devanathan of Meta India. The video, posted on Instagram, showed the former cricketers limping and holding their backs, purportedly to demonstrate the physical toll of their participation in the World Championship of Legends held recently in England. The video was shared after India Champions defeated Pakistan Champions by five wickets in the tournament final.

The NCPEDP’s complaint accuses Instagram, owned by Meta, of violating the Information Technology Act by permitting such content to be posted. The video drew widespread criticism, including from badminton player Manasi Joshi, who condemned the cricketers for their insensitive portrayal.

“This isn’t legendary if you’re mocking gait patterns of people with polio. This will enable bullying of young children with disabilities in India. You don’t know how much harm your behavior can do. The appreciation you’re getting from people around is appalling to see,” Joshi wrote in the comment section. She also expressed concern that the video could lead to more bullying of young children with disabilities.

Joshi further added, “If any of you athletes would have done responsible community service in the disability space, you all would not have come up with this reel.”

The incident has ignited a debate about the responsibilities of public figures and the impact of their actions on vulnerable communities. As the investigation proceeds, the involved parties are yet to issue formal statements regarding the complaint.
