HEMRL has designed and developed bursting and burning type of 81mm Anti Thermal –Anti Laser smoke grenade for Indian Army for use with T-72, T-90, MBT Arjun and BMP-2 to instantaneously generate smoke screen to defeat Thermal Imaging (TI) Sights and LRFs of enemy Tanks. The grenade is fired from an 81mm caliber launcher (SGD) mounted on AFVs to a distance of 55 to 75m and generates white dense smoke screen for more than 20 seconds with a salvo of 4 grenades within 4-5 seconds of launch. The smoke screen obscures visual and IR regions of the electromagnetic spectrum (0.4 to 14 µm) and is capable of defeating TI sights, Laser Range Finder of modern Tanks.

The indigenous development of 81 mm Anti-Thermal Anti-Laser Smoke Grenade is a big boost to the ‘Make in India’ and Atmanirbhar campaign. The developed product has proved its form, fitment, attachment, conformance and compatibility with a wide variety of Tanks available with the Indian Army. The technological improvement of defeating laser range finders and thermal imagers over and above conventional visual obscuration makes this product better than any contemporary product of the world. The technology for production of these grenades has been transferred to Ordnance Factory and M/s Economic Explosives Ltd., Nagpur for bulk production through the ‘Make in India’ route.

The Indian Army has already placed supply orders on both the PAs for production of a lakh grenades and presently is in regular production.
