Baggage to be scanned at stations like airports; free weight allowance varies by travel class

Indian Railways has announced stricter luggage rules for passengers, bringing in an airport-style baggage screening system at major stations. From now on, travelers carrying more than the permitted luggage weight will have to pay extra charges or book the excess as a parcel. Those found carrying unbooked extra baggage may also face penalties.

How Much Free Luggage Is Allowed?

The free allowance depends on the class of travel:

  • First AC: 70 kg per passenger
  • Second AC: 50 kg
  • Third AC / Sleeper Class: 40 kg
  • General Class: 30 kg

In addition, every passenger is permitted 10 kg of extra luggage beyond this limit. Anything above the allowed weight must be booked as a parcel.

Airport-Style Screening at Stations

To implement the rules, Railways will install electronic machines and scanners at entry and exit gates. Every bag will be scanned and tagged, ensuring compliance with both weight and size limits. Oversized bags, even if within the weight limit, may also attract penalties.

Where Will the Rules Apply First?

In the first phase, the new policy will be rolled out at select stations under North Central Railway and Northern Railway.

What Passengers Should Keep in Mind

Railways has advised passengers to carefully check the luggage rules before traveling. Carrying excess baggage without booking may lead to fines or extra charges, much like at airports.

In short, if you’re planning to travel by train in 2025, make sure your bags are within the prescribed weight and size limits to avoid penalties.
