As train delays become more common during winter, Indian Railways is addressing passenger inconveniences by offering complimentary meals and refunds for delays on premium trains like the Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Duronto Express. The IRCTC catering policy ensures that passengers on delayed trains receive support and compensation.
Delays Impacting Premium Train Services
Dense fog and reduced visibility in winter often disrupt train schedules, causing significant delays. Premium services such as Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Duronto Express are particularly affected, leaving passengers stranded for extended periods.
IRCTC’s Complimentary Meal Policy
To mitigate the discomfort of delays, Indian Railways offers free meals to passengers when trains are delayed by two hours or more. These meals are served both to waiting passengers and those already en route.
Meal Options for Passengers:
- Beverage Service: Includes tea or coffee with biscuits, accompanied by sugar (or sugar-free) and milk creamer kits.
- Breakfast or Evening Refreshments: Four slices of bread (white or brown), butter, a 200ml fruit drink, and tea or coffee.
- Lunch or Dinner:
- Option 1: Rice with yellow dal, rajma, or chickpeas (chole), along with pickle sachets.
- Option 2: Seven pooris with mixed vegetables, pickle sachets, and salt/pepper packets.
Refund Policy for Significant Delays
Passengers can cancel their tickets and receive a full refund if:
- A train is delayed by more than three hours.
- The train is rerouted, and passengers opt not to travel.
For tickets booked online, refunds can be processed digitally. However, those who booked tickets at a railway counter must cancel in person to claim a cash refund.
