Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced an ambitious expansion plan, with Indian Railways set to roll out 200 Vande Bharat Express trains over the next two to three years. The initiative will also include the production of 100 Amrit Bharat trains and 50 Namo Bharat trains, covering both sleeper and chair car categories to enhance connectivity across the country.

In a move to improve travel options for lower-income passengers, the Railways will manufacture 17,500 Non-AC General and Sleeper Coaches. This expansion is expected to alleviate congestion and improve accessibility. Vaishnaw noted that the Railways will maintain a 2:3 ratio for non-AC coaches and a 1:3 ratio for AC coaches, ensuring a balanced expansion.

To further enhance infrastructure, the government has launched a special manufacturing program aimed at increasing the availability of general coaches. Additionally, railway construction projects, including new lines, flyovers, and underpasses, are set to accelerate. The 2025-26 Budget reflects this commitment with an allocation of ₹2.52 lakh crore. New projects worth ₹4.6 lakh crore are also planned for completion in the next four to five years, focusing on station redevelopment and network expansion.

Vaishnaw confirmed that 1,400 general coaches will be completed by March 31, with a target of 2,000 new coaches for the 2025-26 fiscal year. Approval has also been granted for the construction of 1,000 new flyovers, further improving railway infrastructure.
