When it comes to travel, Indians have long been drawn to beaches, mountains, and luxurious staycations—places that offer relaxation, adventure, or simply a break from daily life. Travel has always been more than just movement; it is a journey that awakens the senses, offers new perspectives, and sometimes even nudges the soul toward introspection. People search for mountains to find solitude, beaches to feel freedom, and resorts to indulge in comfort. Yet in 2025, Google’s search data reveals that India’s collective curiosity took a distinctly spiritual turn.

The most-searched travel destination this year wasn’t a hill station or a coastal paradise—it was the Maha Kumbh Mela, the once-in-144-years festival that captivates India’s religious and cultural imagination. This landmark event not only topped the Travel Searches category but also featured among the Top Trending Searches for News Events and the Overall Top Searches, highlighting the profound impact it had on the nation’s collective consciousness.

Experts say the festival has significantly enhanced India’s position on the global spiritual-tourism map, drawing attention to the country’s rich cultural heritage. Dr. Vikram Kamat, chairman and managing director of The VITS Kamats Group, notes, “Spiritual tourism was earlier associated mostly with older travelers. But the 2025 Maha Kumbh has captivated younger generations, helping them forge lasting connections with India’s spiritual traditions.”

For many travelers, the Kumbh experience has also served as a doorway to explore other spiritual destinations like Varanasi, Rishikesh, and Bodh Gaya. With the rise of guided tours and improved digital platforms, foreign visitors are now able to enjoy a seamless and immersive spiritual journey. Adding to this trend, Somnath, another major pilgrimage site, ranked ninth among India’s top trending travel searches.

While spiritual tourism took center stage, traditional beach escapes and island getaways remained popular among travelers. The list highlights growing interest in South and Southeast Asian destinations, with searches for the Philippines (2nd), Phu Quoc in Vietnam (6th), Phuket in Thailand (7th), and the Maldives (8th) seeing a notable spike.

Georgia claimed the third spot among international travel searches, offering travelers picturesque landscapes, stunning monasteries, charming European-style streets, and a culinary tradition steeped in history. Meanwhile, Indian favorites like Kashmir (5th), Maldives (8th), and Pondicherry (10th) continued to attract attention. Interestingly, both Georgia and Kashmir maintained their positions from 2024, underscoring their consistent appeal.

The 2025 search trends clearly show a shift in travel priorities. Indians are increasingly seeking experiences that combine culture, spirituality, and adventure. The Maha Kumbh Mela, with its enormous scale and spiritual significance, has become more than just a festival—it is a symbol of India’s cultural depth and global spiritual influence. In a year when wanderlust could have led to any destination, Indians proved that travel is as much about connection and experience as it is about leisure.
