India’s First Onboard ATM Trial A Success On Panchvati Express, Paving Way For Cash Access On Trains
In a groundbreaking move, the Central Railway’s Bhusawal Division has successfully conducted a trial of India’s first onboard ATM in the Mumbai-Manmad Panchavati Express. This innovative step brings banking services directly to train passengers, marking a significant leap in travel convenience and technological advancement.
The Automated Teller Machine (ATM), installed in the general coach, allows passengers to withdraw cash while the train is in motion, without affecting the seating capacity or onboard amenities. This unique concept was introduced without compromising passenger comfort, making it a first-of-its-kind initiative in the Indian Railways network.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared a video on his official X account (formerly Twitter), showing a passenger using the Bank of Maharashtra ATM onboard the moving train. The video quickly garnered attention and praise for its innovation.
Central Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO), Swapnil Nila stated that the technical feasibility of the onboard ATM was thoroughly assessed. Based on the success of this pilot project, similar facilities may be introduced in other trains in the near future.
This trial reflects the Indian Railways’ commitment to enhancing passenger convenience and exploring new revenue models through creative technological solutions.
