Kozhikode, September 6, 2025 — Kerala has confirmed another fatality from amoebic meningoencephalitis, a rare and deadly brain infection caused by free-living amoebae found in contaminated water.
The deceased has been identified as Ratheesh (45), a resident of Sultan Bathery, who passed away while receiving treatment at Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. Doctors revealed that his pre-existing cardiac issues further worsened his condition.
With this case, health officials said 11 patients showing symptoms of the infection are currently under treatment at the same hospital.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid swimming or bathing in untreated water sources, which are known carriers of the organism.
Amoebic meningoencephalitis, though extremely rare, has a high fatality rate. Officials emphasized that the disease is not easily transmissible, but continuous monitoring is underway to prevent further casualties.
