Clip from an arranged marriage ceremony sparks debate over ego, respect and consent.

A wedding video showing a groom refusing to participate in the varmala ritual while the bride stands quietly beside him has gone viral, drawing widespread criticism on social media. The clip, reportedly shared on X, shows the groom seated on a chair as the bride, garland in hand, waits patiently during the ceremony.

In the short video, the groom appears visibly agitated. As the bride stands to his right holding the varmala, he dismisses her attempts and gestures sharply at people around him. At one point, another woman steps in to intervene, but the groom raises his hand, signalling her to stop, before turning toward the camera and addressing members of the gathering. The exact location and reason behind the confrontation remain unclear.

The clip is set to the title track of the film Kabir Singh, and the groom’s actual words are not audible. The accompanying caption read, “Arranged marriage is scary, what if he…”, hinting at concerns around behaviour and compatibility in arranged setups.

The groom’s conduct quickly angered viewers, many of whom felt the bride was being publicly disrespected. One user commented, “He is an as$hole with so much attitude, and he created an embarrassing situation for the bride’s family.” Another speculated that the ceremony may have been stalled due to unmet demands, writing, “Seems to be a demand for which marriage ceremony is being withheld.”

Several users questioned the groom’s behaviour outright. “Isme kis baat ka attitude hai?” one user asked, translating to, “Why does he have so much attitude?” Others reflected on the broader implications, noting that arranged marriages are often built on mutual respect and patience. One comment read, “People in arranged marriages are respectful and fall in love with each other, especially at this age. These are egoistic guys whose peer group never taught them how to behave.”

Some viewers expressed hope that the bride chose to walk away. “Hopefully she walked away and didn’t have to put up with tantrum queen for the rest of her life,” a user wrote.

The incident has reignited conversations around dignity, consent and emotional maturity during wedding rituals, especially in public settings where pressure and expectations often run high. While weddings are meant to symbolise unity and mutual respect, viral clips like this highlight how fragile those moments can become when ego takes centre stage.
