The much-anticipated Metro route connecting Maan village, Hinjewadi, and Shivajinagar is expected to miss its revised September 2025 launch deadline, with Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) indicating a possible extension into next year.

Originally scheduled to open in April 2025, the 24-kilometre elevated corridor, which will include 23 stations, had already seen its timeline pushed to September due to incomplete work. The line aims to provide seamless access from the city to the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjewadi and is being developed by Pune IT City Metro Rail Ltd (PITCMRL) on behalf of PMRDA.

According to PMRDA officials in a report in Hindustan Times, stated that about 85% of the project has been completed. “Basic infrastructure for trial runs will be ready by December-end. Once trial runs are completed and safety systems receive clearance, operations can begin,” an official said.

However, key portions of the project, especially civil works at the Pune University junction, are still pending. The location is part of an ambitious double-decker flyover, with Metro tracks on the top level and vehicular traffic on the lower level, stretching from Pune University to the College of Agriculture.

Civic activist Vivek Velankar criticised the repeated delays, stating that commuters should not bear the brunt of administrative inefficiencies. “Thousands of IT professionals commute between Hinjewadi and the city daily. Timely completion of this project is crucial,” he said.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar had previously visited the site and directed PMRDA to expedite work, especially on the Shivajinagar to Aundh stretch along Ganeshkhind Road. The Hinjewadi–Shivajinagar Metro line is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and promote the use of public transport once operational.
