Legendary vocalist Prabha Atre passes away in Pune
Veteran & acclaimed Indian classical singer Prabha Atre has passed away at her residence in Pune. She breathed her last at the age of 92. Atre suffered a heart attack in the early morning while she was sleeping. She was admitted to Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital for treatment.
Her death has come as a shock to the music industry. Atre was invited to Mumbai from Pune to perform in a program ‘Swaraprabha’. Even at the age of 91, she was still singing and attending public functions.
Atre was a singer from Kirana Gharana. The Government of India has honoured her with many awards like ‘Padma Shri’, ‘Padma Bhushan’, ‘Padma Vibhushan’ etc for her contribution to the field of music. She has also been honoured with Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India.
Atre was born in Pune. She turned to classical singing at the age of eight. While studying music, she completed degrees in science and law. Later, she did her doctorate in music. Prabha Atre was known as a talented singer, music composer, writer, professor etc. She had mastered various singing types such as thumri, dadra, ghazal, classical music, theatrical music, bhajan and more. She had a deep knowledge of Indian classical music.
Prabha Atre holds the world record of publishing 11 books. She published 11 books on music in Hindi and English in New Delhi. Atre was one of the leading Indian classical singers.
