The much-anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport is expected to open by year’s end, according to Jyotiraditya Scindia, Union Minister for Civil Aviation. He was speaking in Pune, where he had come to review the progress of the new terminal which is slated for inauguration soon.

While in Nagpur on Friday to officially open the AAR-Indamer Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at the MIHAN SEZ, Scindia also announced plans to build at least two airports in each of the nation’s ten largest cities within the next ten to fifteen years.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport, officially known as the DB Patil International Airport, is currently being built in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai, in the Raigad district. After it is finished, it will replace the current Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport as the second airport serving the Mumbai Metropolitan Area. On February 18, 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the foundation plaque at the airport’s ground-breaking ceremony.

The three phases of the airport’s development will allow it to accommodate 2.5 crore passengers annually in its first phase. By 2032, the last stage should be finished and able to accommodate over 9 crore passengers and 25 lakh tonnes of cargo annually.

Jyotiraditya Scindia said that the Navi Mumbai International Airport will commence operations in November or December of this year. During this time, the first flight is anticipated to land, which will be a major turning point in the development of Navi Mumbai. He underlined that the airport will play a significant role in the rapid development of Navi Mumbai and the surrounding area, especially the Konkan region.

In addition, he emphasized the accomplishment of long-awaited goals, such as the Friday opening of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Mumbai.
