Lionesses With 8 Cubs Stroll Onto Gujarat Highway, Bring Traffic To A Halt
Unusual lion sighting near Gir Somnath stirs concern and curiosity as conservation challenges emerge.
In a rare yet increasingly frequent scene, traffic on Ronj Road State Highway near Kodinar in Gujarat’s Gir Somnath district came to a standstill as two lionesses and eight cubs wandered onto the road. The area is barely an hour from the renowned Gir National Park, the only natural habitat of Asiatic lions in the world.
The pride has reportedly been spotted near villages surrounding Kodinar over the past few days and has now been seen closer to the town itself. Viral videos of the lions calmly occupying the road have raised both alarm and awe, as more such sightings are being reported beyond forest boundaries.
This unusual movement comes amid an ongoing lion mating program in the region and points to potential ecological challenges. Forest officials suspect that disturbances in the forest, possibly caused by a surge in mosquitoes and changes in habitat patterns, may be pushing these big cats toward human settlements.
According to the latest census conducted this month, the Asiatic lion population in Gujarat has risen significantly to 891, up from 674 recorded five years ago. The 16th lion census covered 11 districts including Gir Somnath, Junagadh, Amreli, and Bhavnagar, revealing both the success of conservation efforts and the urgent need for expanded protected zones.
As authorities monitor the movements of this lion family, locals are being urged to remain cautious and alert, while wildlife teams continue to work on ensuring both human and animal safety.
