Liquor Ban During Ganeshotsav In Pune: Vendors Question Efficacy, Ganesh Mandals Demand Permanent Prohibition
In a bid to prevent mishaps during Ganeshotsav, the Pune administration has ordered the closure of liquor shops and pubs in the central part of the city until the immersion procession. The decision, taken to maintain law and order, has been met with mixed reactions.
Liquor vendors have raised concerns about the unilateral decision, questioning whether it will truly reduce crime. “Will crime and misdemeanors really decrease after the sale of liquor is stopped?” asked Sunil Kunjir, a bar and restaurant operator. Vendors pointed out that many depend on liquor sales and will face financial losses due to the closure.
A meeting between police officials, including Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, and office bearers of major Ganesh Mandals preceded the decision. The Mandals demanded the closure of liquor shops and pubs to prevent mischief during the festival. Collector Dr. Suhas Diwase approved the proposal, ordering the closure of liquor shops within the limits of Khadak, Vishram Bagh, and Faraskhana police stations.
The closure affects 61 liquor shops, including 10 wine shops, 32 permit rooms, 10 beer shops, and 10 country liquor shops. Liquor vendors pay substantial annual fees, ranging from ₹4 lakh to ₹19 lakh, to operate. The sudden closure has left them worried about their livelihoods.
Ganesh Mandals, however, welcomed the decision and demanded a permanent ban on liquor sales in Pune city and district during future festivals. “The decision to ban liquor sales is good. Liquor shops should be closed in the entire Pune city and district during the festival next year,” said a trustee of a popular Ganesh mandal in Pune.
The liquor ban has sparked debate about its effectiveness in reducing crime. While some argue it will prevent mischief, others question its impact on livelihoods. As the city navigates the festival season, the administration must balance public safety with the concerns of liquor vendors and business owners.
