Pune: Residents of Bavdhan are troubled by the continuous littering of liquor bottles, snacks, and other types of garbage in open plots of Bavdhan due to which pigs, snakes, mosquitoes & other types of animals keep coming, posing a threat to people’s lives.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Dilip Jaju, a resident of Bavdhan said, “Several people consume alcohol, snacks and more in various open plots in areas like Shinde Nagar, Bavdhan Tekdi and others after which they litter & throw the boxes, liquor bottles, food etc in any way & anywhere possible. Due to this, pigs & other animals keep coming into the unhygienic areas. When one pig comes, it gives birth to several pigs. Hence, around 20 pigs are there as of now. As pigs love staying in the dirt, unhygienic areas and all, they also tend to come on clean streets, etc. Also, due to the unhygienic areas, the amount of mosquitoes also increases. Health hazards are also there.”

Samir Parikh, a Resident of Bavdhan, said, “In the Shinde Nagar area where I stay, pigs, snakes and other animals keep coming. Recently, a snake of around 6 feet was caught. Due to many bars, liquor shops in Bavdhan, people simply keep drinking in the open & throwing bottles, thermocol & other types of garbage anywhere. Due to a dead pig, so much stink was coming & due to so much garbage dumping, it was difficult to find him in the garbage. Also, mosquitoes have increased. We cannot send kids to play in areas where many plants, bushes, trees, etc are there due to fear of snakes.”

Sachin Gayake, another resident of Bavdhan said, “People throw food & other types of waste on the roads. Mosquitoes increase, pigs come & overall, unhygienic conditions have increased. Earlier, this wasn’t the case. In today’s times, restaurants & eateries have increased in Bavdhan. Hence, the garbage issue keeps increasing.”

C S Krishnan, Core Member, Bavdhan Citizens Forum said, “Various open & unattended plots in Bavdhan have become a health hazard for people residing near the open plots. The owners are not bothered to keep the plot clean as they don’t reside next to the plot. These plots have become health hazards due to plenty of overgrown weeds and bushes making it a paradise for mosquitoes, a hiding place for snakes, an ideal place to dump garbage, a comfortable place to urinate, a shelter for pigs, an ideal place for an open bar, etc. We hope that the PMC looks into this matter and finds a solution to maintain and clean it.”

Hanumant Chakankar, Health Department Officer, PMC said, “The open plots get cleaned daily. For the pigs & animal issue, people from some organizations are called where they come, pick up & keep the animals in a safe place. An incident of a pig dying had happened in Shinde Nagar a while ago. So, it was disposed of. The open plots are private properties. Hence, after a point, even we cannot take matters into our own hands. However, cleaning of all the open plots & all areas in Bavdhan is going on daily.”
